Luis Téllez is an Operating Partner at Butterfly and supports Butterfly’s sourcing, due diligence and business development efforts in Mexico. Mr. Téllez was Chairman and CEO of the Mexican Stock Exchange (MSE) from 2009 to 2014. He served as Mexico’s Secretary of Communications and Transportation from 2006 to 2009 and Secretary of Energy from 1997 to 2000. He also served as Chief of Staff to President Ernesto Zedillo from 1994 to 1997. He previously led the operations in Mexico of KKR as Senior Advisor, Head of Mexico. Since 2021, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of NTT- Data Services. Prior to the MSE, he was Managing Director of the Carlyle Group in Mexico (2003-2006) and Chief Executive Officer of Desc (2001-2003), a Mexican industrial conglomerate. Mr. Téllez was also Mexico’s Deputy Secretary of Agriculture from 1990 to 1993 when he was head of the agricultural and foods chapters of NAFTA. He also headed the team to change the land tenure laws to eliminate uncertainty regarding property rights. He was Head Economist at Mexico’s Treasury Department from 1987 to 1990. Mr. Tellez earned a PhD in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Since March 2021, Mr. Téllez serves as a member to Chubb’s Board of Directors. He currently serves as a director of two public companies in Mexico, Cultiba and Grupo Aereoportuario del Pacífico (GAP), and was a director of Sempra Energy from 2010 until 2015.
